What is anxiety?


Many people have heard about anxiety, and many of us have someone so close to them who already suffered or still suffering from this mental illness. So what exactly is anxiety?

Anxiety is a term used to describe a situation in which the person feels uncomfortable and it could be caused by different disorders that probably turn into physical symptoms as being tense, nervous and worry and the list is long…

Have you ever felt nervous before an exam or when giving a speech? If the answer is yes don’t worry because it’s the normal way the body reacts when facing a challenging situations and this lead us to know what anxiety is all about, it is just the reaction of the body to protect itself from what can be considered as a harmful situation or when being outside of the comfort zone.

There are many levels of anxiety that varies from one to another and it can affect your life in many ways such as being unable to sleep or work properly and even go out or has a proper social life… in general anxiety occurs when the body reaction is exaggerated with what is usually expected.

Generalized anxiety disorder :


It is so normal to have worries and everyone may experience anxiety from time to time, but if your anxiety extends and interrupts your daily life and you find your worries become constant and irrational then maybe you have generalized anxiety disorder or as it is known GAD.

If you have GAD you may start out by having simple worries about things that may or may not happen, you may also feel anxious all the time from the moment you wake up to the moment you fall asleep for no obvious reason, the worries become a part of your daily life even though they have no foundation at all.

If you suffer from GAD you are always anticipating negative outcome to everything you face, you may worry about your health, financial situation, relationships or death….

Panic attack :


Panic attack is a sudden feeling of terror and extreme fear that strikes the person without a warning sign, what really happens is that the body reacts as if the person is in situation which is extremely  dangerous and starts releasing too much adrenaline that creates the feelings of panic and push you to run and save your life like if there is a lion chasing you. But what is happening around you does not reflect and unrelated to what you are experiencing, you think you are safe but your sub-conscious thinks you are not. This condition can occur anytime and anywhere even when you are sleeping, the person under the panic attack may believe he is having a heart attack or he is dying. Here is a list of the most common symptoms of a panic attack:
  • racing heart.
  • Feeling weak, dizzy or faint.
  • Sense of terror and extreme fear.
  • feeling sweaty.
  • Chest pains.
  • Feeling like you are losing control.
  • Numbness in the hands or shaking hands.
  • Difficulties in breathing…
