Medications: the medications used to treat schizophrenia are called antipsychotics. There are 2 types or generations of antipsychotic medications:

1. the first generation of these medications known as “neuroleptics”, they were launched in the mid-1950s, these drugs are effective in reducing the most disturbing symptoms of schizophrenia like delusions and hallucinations but they have many major side effects such as involuntary movements, hypersensitivity reaction…also these drugs are not effective in reducing the negative symptoms such as decreased motivation, losing interest in life and lack of emotions…

Here is a list of some of the first generation medications:
  • Thorazine
  • Prolixin
  • Haldol
  • Navane
  • Stelazine
  • Trilafon
  • Mellaril

2. The second generations of antipsychotics are called “atypical antipsychotics”, they were launched in 1989. This generation was released in order to decrease the neurological side effects the previous one causes. Though the newer medications are more effective and less dangerous, the side effects remain present but less severe, these drugs can cause weight gain, high blood sugar, cholesterol and many other unwanted effects.

Here is a list of some of the second generation medications:
  • Abilify

People with schizophrenia may experience the relapse of the illness when the medications are not taken regularly or especially when the patient stops taking the drugs brutally and without the doctor’s supervision.

The majority of the patients feel a major relief once they are treated with antipsychotic medications. But in some case, schizophrenia sufferers do not respond to the treatment and other options seem to be needed.

People with this mental disorder should follow a treatment plan. They have to take medications combined with other treatment options like therapy, family support or rehabilitation in order to get the best results.
