Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a wide spread mental illness that occurs commonly during childhood, adolescence and rarely in adulthood. This mental illness causes inevitable problems at home at school and elsewhere. ADHD as we have seen before is grouped into several categories hyperactivity, impulsiveness, inattention and the combined type. Each type of ADHD has its own symptoms and characteristics.

It is very important for parents, teachers or anyone else working in the educational system or dealing with children to have a full knowledge about the illness in order to recognize the symptoms and the primary signs of ADHD, because an early diagnosis is very useful and helpful in the treatment of this mental illness to keep the child safe from developing other dangerous complications.

What are the symptoms of ADHD in children?


1. The predominately inattentive type :
this type has several symptoms related to inattention and distractibility. Here is a list of the symptoms:
  • The child do not pay attention or and seem to be careless.
  • He is easily distracted.
  • He has difficulties following instructions and completing tasks.
  • He tends to forget easily things learned.
  • He doesn’t pay attention when someone is speaking.
  • He tends to fail finishing his work.
  • Avoid activities that require a continuous effort.
  • He often loses his personal things.
  • He has tendency to daydream or staring into the space.
  • He seems to have trouble organizing daily tasks.
   
2. The predominantly hyperactive impulsive type:
this type has many symptoms related to hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Here is a list of the symptoms:

a. Symptoms associated with hyperactivity:
  • the child is restless and always on the go
  • He is always moving (leg swinging, running, climbing on things, fidgeting, squirming, taping, humming…)
  • Disturbing other people or children next to him.
  • He can’t sit still and usually leaves the seat without permission.
  • He can’t play without making too much noise.
  • Talking excessively.

b. Symptoms associated with impulsiveness:
  • The child acts without thinking.
  • He seems to be careless, disrespectful, reckless or even daredevil.
  • He does not think about the consequences of his actions.
  • He has difficulties waiting for his turn.
  • He is always in trouble.
  • He often interrupts other people.
  • He tends to blurt out answers before the question is complete.

3. The combined type: this type of ADHD includes the symptoms of the first two categories, a child with this type may experience symptoms related to inattention, distractibility, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

What are the symptoms of ADHD in adults?


Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is not common between adults, and the chance of getting this illness is very low.
The symptoms of ADHD are usually different compared to the symptoms in children.

Here is a list of the symptoms:
  • Anxiety and stress.
  • Impulsive behaviors.
  • Mood swings and chronic boredom.
  • Low self esteem.
  • Depression and episodes of “down mood”.
  • Substance abuse and addictions.
  • Relationships problems.
  • Forgetting easily and the lack of organization skills.
  • Concentrating difficulties.
  • Employment problems.
  • High frustration levels and uncontrolled anger.
  • Procrastination.
