ADHD Treatment - ADHD treatment options!

10:51
Medications used to treat attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) such as stimulants or non stimulant drugs do not cure the illness, however, they can reduce the symptoms associated with ADHD like hyperactivity, impulsive behavior, inattention or distractibility, and increase the ability of the child to live properly in the community and get better results in school.

Although, the ultimate cure of this condition is not found yet, children with ADHD should not be ignored and parents must seek professional help as soon as possible in order to reduce the risk of other psychological complications that can be developed such as anxiety disorders, clinical depression, learning disorders and low self esteem. In the other hand teens with ADHD are more likely to have problems like early pregnancy or substance abuse (smoking, alcohol and drug abuse)…And adults may experience difficulties in managing time, finding a job or having stable relationships.

Most children with ADHD (up to 80%) experience a major relief and their symptoms seem to disappear when they are treated properly and carefully. The treatment of this illness includes medications and psychosocial therapies; however, they can be used combined to get the best result.

What are the treatment options for ADHD?

Medications : medications are very effective in treating and controlling ADHD symptoms. These drugs may have short, intermediate or long acting forms and the role of the doctor is to find the most appropriate drug and dosage for the ADHD patient.
There are two categories of ADHD medications:

I. Stimulants: this type of medications is very common and has been used for decades to control hyperactivity, impulsiveness and increase attention span. Stimulants are used in the treatment of children, teens and adults with ADHD.
Here is a list of the most common stimulants:

Adderall XR, Concerta, Vyvanse, Quillivant XR, and Focalin XR are approved only for the use in adults and should not be prescribed to children.

II. Non stimulants: when stimulants seem to be useless and the patient does not respond to the medication or when unwanted side effects have occurred, then non stimulants might be taken into consideration. Also Non stimulants can be used combined with stimulants.

Side effects: stimulants have many side effects especially for children under the age of 6 and sometimes some major side effects may occur.
Most common side effects include:
